Here are two recipes for homemade vegetarian dog food meals: healthy, nutritious and completely meatless.

Vegetarian dog food can be easily prepared at home. These two recipes both constitute wholesome, healthy meal options for your dog. Homemade vegetarian food is not only free of additives, artificial flavoring and contaminants like bacteria often found in commercial dog food – it can also help your dog with meat allergies and allow you to stick to a lifestyle that is about compassion, non-violence and the environment.

Dog Food Recipe with Oat Flakes

This is a meal based on oat flakes.

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups of oat flakes
  • ¼ soy milk or soy milk powder (may be substituted with smashed, cooked pinto beans)
  • ¼ cup wheat bran
  • 1 teaspoon of wheat germ
  • 1 teaspoon of ground sunflower seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of ground flax seeds
  • ½ teaspoon of vegetable oil (for example olive oil)
  • 1 teaspoon of yeast (optional, for better taste)

Instructions:

  1. Start by mixing all the ingredients together.
  2. Then soak the mixture in hot water for about 20 minutes.
  3. Make sure the temperature is not too hot before serving.
  4. For convenience, meal-sized parts of the mixture may be kept in the freezer and prepared later by adding hot water.

The above recipe is measured for smaller dogs. For medium and large dogs, approximately double the amounts should be used.

Rice Porridge Recipe

This recipe is based on rice.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of (brown) rice
  • 6 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tablespoon tamari or soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seed oil

Instructions:

  1. Put the rice into a pot filled with the water and boil it until it is properly cooked, letting it simmer for about 30 minutes.
  2. Chop the onion and stir-fry it in a frying pan using the vegetable oil.
  3. Pour the cooked rice into the frying pan.
  4. Adding the tamari/soy sauce and sesame seed oil, fry over low heat for a couple of minutes, stirring from time to time.

Advantages of Preparing Your Own Dog Food at Home

There are many benefits of homemade dog food. Firstly, it is free of the additives, flavorings and contaminants often found in industrial pet food. Furthermore, it allows you to know exactly what goes into your dog’s food and what doesn’t – which is important, especially when considering what's in commercial pet food and how it is made. If its diet is well balanced, most dogs can thrive on a purely vegetarian diet, too. However, you should consult your veterinarian before switching your dog to an exclusively vegetarian diet.
